Ann-Marita: Music

State Line

(Ann-Marita)
Words and music by Ann-Marita Garsed
STATE LINE

1. She had always known that all she owned
worth keeping
Could be packed in a couple of bags as they were leaving
By the time they were out of arm’s reach,
the baby was sleepin’
And the sun wouldn’t rise until they’d crossed the state line

2. Still she made sure to keep her sunglasses on while drivin’
In case the Highway Patrol were out in full force this mornin’
Cause if anyone saw the black eye those glasses were hidin’
They’d take all the power she’d spent so damn long to find

(CHORUS).
And she quietly sang every song she knew
so her baby would not have to wake up to
The sound of Mama crying one more time
And she whispered a thank you
right from the heart,
if it wasn’t for her
she would’ve fallen apart
And stayed on the receiving end
for as long as she could stay alive

3. From now on the woman she had been
would stop existing
A P.O. box in a new name, ‘n somehow make a living
By the time people she barely knew
might report them missing
They’d be too far gone
to ever be found again

(CHORUS REPEAT):
And she quietly sang every song she knew
so her baby would not have to wake up to
The sound of Mama crying one more time
And she whispered a thank you right from the heart,
if it wasn’t for her
she would’ve fallen apart
And stayed on the receiving end
for as long as she could stay alive

(TAG):
She had to believe
that it was a sign
The beautiful sunrise
as they crossed the state line

Ooooh oooh oooh, a-ha……
